  • Opportunities for innovation: Web3 opens up new possibilities for developers and entrepreneurs to create innovative applications and business models. The decentralized nature of web3 allows for experimentation and the exploration of novel ideas.

7 Cons of web3

  • Complexity: Web3 technologies can be complex to understand and implement, requiring specialized knowledge and skills. This can pose a barrier to entry for developers and users who are not familiar with blockchain and decentralized systems.
  • Scalability challenges: Blockchain-based web3 platforms often face scalability challenges, as the consensus mechanisms used to validate transactions can limit the number of transactions per second. This can result in slower and more expensive transactions compared to traditional web technologies.
  • Energy consumption: Some web3 platforms, particularly those based on proof-of-work consensus algorithms, require significant amounts of computational power and energy consumption. This has raised concerns about the environmental impact of these technologies.
  • User experience limitations: The user experience of web3 applications may currently be less polished and user-friendly compared to traditional web applications. This can make adoption and mainstream use more challenging.

  • Potential for misuse: While web3 technologies offer many benefits, they can also be misused for illicit activities such as money laundering and fraud. This has led to concerns about the potential negative impacts of unchecked decentralized systems.
  • Dependency on internet connectivity: Web3 technologies heavily rely on internet connectivity. In areas with limited or unreliable internet access, the benefits and functionality of web3 may be limited.

Cases when web3 does not work

Does not work
  1. Unsupported Browser: Web3 requires a modern browser with built-in support for the Web3 JavaScript library. If a user is using an outdated browser or a browser that does not support Web3, it will not work properly. For instance, Internet Explorer does not support Web3, while most modern browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Safari do.
  2. Missing Web3 Provider: Web3 relies on a provider to connect to the Ethereum network. If the user’s browser does not have a Web3 provider installed or configured, they will not be able to interact with the Ethereum blockchain. Common Web3 providers include MetaMask, Trust Wallet, and Infura.
  3. Incorrect Network Selection: Web3 relies on the user selecting the correct Ethereum network to interact with. If the user is connected to the wrong network (e.g., a test network instead of the mainnet), certain functionalities may not work as expected.
  4. Unreachable Network: Sometimes, the Ethereum network itself may experience issues or downtime, which can affect the functioning of Web3. If the network is unreachable or experiencing high latency, users may face difficulties in interacting with the blockchain.
  5. Smart Contract Incompatibility: Web3 interacts with smart contracts deployed on the Ethereum blockchain. If a user tries to interact with a smart contract that is not compatible with the version of Web3 they are using, it may lead to errors or unexpected behavior.
  6. Insufficient Gas: When performing transactions on the Ethereum network, users need to pay for computational resources using a cryptocurrency called gas. If a user does not have enough gas in their Ethereum wallet to cover the transaction fees, the transaction may fail or not execute as expected.
  7. Server-Side Restrictions: In some cases, the web server hosting the application may have restrictions or configurations that prevent Web3 from functioning properly. For example, certain security measures or firewalls may block Web3 requests, limiting the functionality of the application.
  8. Permission Issues: Web3 relies on permissions to access certain user data, such as account information or transaction signing. If a user denies permission to access these resources, certain functionalities may not work as intended.
  9. Incorrect Code Implementation: If the Web3 integration within an application is implemented incorrectly or contains bugs, it can lead to issues where certain features or interactions do not function as intended.
